You may be wondering what I was thinking when bought this table… well it had 2 things going for it…

1-it had great legs

2-it was cheap

I’m not really the kind of DIY’er that buys junky furniture in order to create something new… I WISH I had that skill set, but alas I do not and I truly envy people who do… So this makeover will not be a big “WOW! What a change” but it may spark an idea for you…  think about it, I got a great table base for less than half the cost of a 1 new table leg!

The top of the table is Formica and looked out of place on the base, I knew I wanted something else…

custom pine topped table

My Super Awesome Hubby attached three pine planks together with the biscuit joiner and then routered the edges of the top. I spray primed the legs and then painted them with some leftover custom mix Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. I sanded down the top (220 grit paper) and stained it with dark walnut stain.

I just think the square pine plank top looks so much better than the round top on this table. I waxed the top with Annie Sloan Dark Wax, then clear wax, buffed and shined it up!

I lightly distressed the base and sealed the paint with a coat of Annie Sloan Clear Wax.

I’m taking this table to Lucketts… I think it will look so cute with my owl print chairs! This table would make a great game table or it’s just the perfect size for a small kitchen.

  2. Hi Susan, can’t help but wonder if “someone” in the past ruined the original top and married it with that horrible formica top. You were so right. The top and the legs did not look like they ever belonged together. What did you do with the formica top? If not a giant frisbee, repainted it would make a great clock face.

    1. Thanks so much Charlotte! The top was original to the piece, I just saw another table just like it for sale! I wish I would have though about using the top for a clock face… Of course that would have been brilliant! I put mine in the free cycle space at the dump… Shoot! I’ll have to ask your opinion next time 😉

  4. Susan, what are you talking about? 😉 YOU DO HAVE THE SKILL SET. The round formica was all wrong and you knew it. Not to mention, you lucky girl, you husband is handy and made the new wood plank top. You guys are good together.
    Now it’s perfect and those “great legs” are nicely accentuated in the beautiful color you whipped up! I always love to see your latest in my inbox. Have a happy week.

  14. I’ve been painting furniture with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint for a little over 6 months now and fell in love with it right from the beginning. Last summer I was browsing around some blogs and kept seeing people painting furniture. And they were using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. I hadn’t even heard of this paint before, but the more I read about it, the more I wanted to try it out. I had a semi-successful experiment with homemade chalk paint, but I just couldn’t get this “miracle paint” out of my mind and just knew I had to try it.
