I’m pretty sure some of you may be thinking “Why oh why did you buy this Susan?” and once I would have thought the same thing… The top is a wood grain laminate, but it is a great mid-century piece made by American of Martinsville, very sturdy and well made. Although I’m not generally a mid-century furniture kind of girl I have recently seen quite a few pieces that have caught my eye and I am really starting to appreciate this period of furniture!

A new client of mine, who also bought the curvy front chest, wanted this piece to go in her teenage daughter’s bedroom as a nightstand. I suggested she paint it red… which not only coordinated with her bedding but also would bring a nice pop of color into the room!

BEFORE

First I lightly sanded down the top with 150 grit sandpaper to increase the adhesion of the paint. I then painted the table with two coats of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Emperor’s Silk. I lightly distressed the table and sealed it with Annie Sloan clear wax. I buffed it with 0000 steel wool and a soft cloth.

AFTER

While I was painting the cabinet I was soaking the drawer handle in Ammonia to strip off any coatings and prepare the knob for paint. I painted the handle with a few coats of Krylon 18k Gold spray… I think this paint is my new obsession!

As a side note I’m currently trying to finish 2 dining table and chair sets (YIKES!)… so it was nice to be able to take a break from those big projects and finally finish something! I happen to love this little red table!

  8. I love it I saw a great little dresser with mirror and a headboard but it also had a desk that was angled and selling as a set. Same company same laminate top and same design, I wanted to buy it but the angled desk was a no…I had thought take a chance and go with ASCP in her orange tone…..would be fun. love you showing these styles can be great…and antibes green would be another great color for this style….again looks great and I think you showed how paint can make and era look great

    1. Thanks Kathy! I’m not sure where in Oregon you can get the paint, but if you go to the Annie Sloan website she has a page with all of the US dealers… I had to have mine shipped from SC for a while until we got a dealer near me!

  12. Oh my god, I LOVE this. Red works perfectly on the bamboo look for a kind of Chinese feel. I am definitely a ‘mid century kind of girl’ (my flat was built in the 70s so my look is very retro-modern) but what I like about this is that it kind of straddles the eras – it would look great in my bedroom (where oh where can I find one in in London?!) but would totally work in an older house too. Great job and so simple.
