Curvy Claw Foot Chest

PURIST PLEASE AVERT YOUR EYES!

But I’m not sorry I painted this chest… well technically I only painted part of it so maybe only be a little mad if you are going to be mad at all Winking smile

So this claw foot chest is very pretty the way I found it… but I thought it needed a little “something”…

BEFORE

This is what happened after I painted one coat of Pure White Annie Sloan Chalk Paint… the piece had been recently oiled with something (I could smell it, that’s not weird at all!) but I wanted to see how the chalk paint would react to the surface oil… this is what it did! Kind of cool…

Another shot of the flaking that occurred after it dried…

And this is what I ended up with after sanding down the flaking… I just LOVE it! VERY chippy and rustic looking! I waxed it with CeCe Caldwell’s clear wax… which I am now obsessed with! Seriously try it if you have not!

I chose to leave the beautiful Birdseye maple drawer fronts original… (you’re welcome!) Don’t you just adore the curvy fronts too?!

Just check out this claw foot and original wood wheel!

I contemplated changing out the knobs but I do like the look of the original wood ones for this piece…

The top looks like the original maple veneer was removed, but they did a great job of refinishing it!

This chest is nice and low and I think it would make a great TV stand or accent piece! What do you think… do you like the BEFORE or the AFTER better? I just finished this piece and it is for sale in case you are interested!

Thanks for stopping by…

Until next time!

  1. I loved the way it turned out. Isn’t it funny how each piece turns out so differently, you never know just what you are going to get?

  2. Hi Susan, I had this same thing happen to me in the corners of a bed. I wanted to see what would happen to so I applied another coat and it covered over it and you never saw what the first coat was like. I like the way you left it and sanded it. Cool piece.

  3. Hello Susan! Sorry to say but, i would choose the before! 🙂 Maybe the paint you use was not the right paint for it. I think it would be best if you sand it first or perhaps, let someone who knew much about painting to do it. 🙂 But, It is never that bad at all. It’s unique. -http://www.colonialrestorationstudio.com/

  4. nice job but do change the knobs-these look cheap and modern…something more ornate or even flowers on ceramic would spruce it up and make it a real “old” piece

  5. This is so fantastic. I’m not sure I would have painted it, but you definitely made the right decision because it looks so special now! Pinning.

    Have a great day!

  6. I like the piece looking a little “worn”. It adds to the story, right? I featured a new piece on my post today that I saw at a furniture store that has a similar look so I had to stop by and see yours. I love it.

  7. I am a BIG fan of curvy vintage furniture, but I can’t cover up the beautiful wood either. I have done some pieces with paint and the natural wood showing and I love it! I think it’s the perfect balance.
