So this mahogany chest started out in pretty sad shape, it was very abused! However, I really like these sized chests as I think you can use them just about anywhere, bedside, bathroom, living room even the kitchen… so home it came with me!
I sanded down and repaired all of the scratches and veneer issues and because it was mahogany I did prime it with Zinsser primer, otherwise the red would have bled through the paint… no matter what kind of paint I used (I’ve learned this lesson the hard way)…

SOOO much better now don’t you think? I painted the chest with Benjamin Moore Advance paint that I had color matched to Provence chalk paint… I just LOVE this color blue!
The final finish is very smooth as the paint is self leveling… I used a regular paint brush when painting this…
The knobs I soaked in ammonia and hot tap water for a few hours and after drying I sprayed them with a grey primer. The final coat is chrome Rustoleum spray paint. I love the not so perfect finish that was accidental but I went with it!
It even has this cute little pull out shelf!
I do prefer to work with chalk paint, but the Ben Moore Advance paint is a close second and it really comes first if I am not planning on doing any distressing to the piece… it just provides a fabulous finish! Hope you like it too!

I, too like the Benjamin Moore paints. I painted a dark pine end table in a dark blue finish for our den, and a small badly scratched bench in a sage green that I stenciled on the back. I still have to wax the bench, but it is so cute and I love the painted finish-very smooth. The chest is beautiful.

Beautiful job as usual. I do have a question – you referred to the Benjamin Moore paint job as “self leveling”. Have not heard that before. What exactly does it mean? Thanks!!

With self-leveling paint you can paint with a regular brush and the paint spreads out and levels so that there are very few if any brush strokes.. It’s a great paint for furniture!

I do, the primer was shellac based… I just really hate mahogany!

VERY classy! This piece would be awesome in a Southwestern decor. Is the Benjamin Moore paint you used oil based? Oil based paint takes so long to dry and smells horrible while it’s wet, but it’s completely forgiving – never see brush strokes.

Cute chest of drawers! Have used the flat Ben.Moore and added the calcium carbonate, worked well, especially after the mix sat around for a while. Did you use the flat formula? Thanks, Mary Anne

Thanks Mary Anne! I used Satin finish, the finish is more like a waxed finish I think… I didn’t do any distressing so I wanted a cleaner final product.

What a fabulous way to recycle an almost throw away piece if left in the mahogany color. Love the turquoise blue-it’s the color of my stria wallpaper in my dining room.

Hi Susan, I love your page, just found you! Did you wax over the satin finish or can you. And say…..you were painting a coffee table, would you use wax. As you can tell I’m new at this, I bought my first can of chalk paint yesterday!

I didn’t have to wax over the finish and would not unless I painted it black and distressed it… the snading turns black to grey and waxing it brings back the black! I would wax pretty much anything I have painted with ASCP or CeCe Caldwell paints.. I don’t care to work with poly… good luck!
