Pretty freakin’ awesome isn’t it?
Well… I love it! I’m sure I paid too much for it based on the condition it was in, but I don’t regret it! It is a vintage piece made by Berkey & Gay and is in great physical shape but with some serious cosmetic defects…
I basically “robbed Peter to pay Paul” on this piece… removing wood stiles completely from some areas and using them to make repairs on others… I removed all of the stiles that were still on the doors in order to repair the drawer fronts and top sides… worked pretty good if I do say so myself…
The white stuff you see is duct tape residue… lots of fun too remove! There was just no way I could keep any of this stained… too much veneer repair was necessary… a shame because the grain is so pretty!
I bought this piece in mid February and finished all but the sanding and waxing a couple of months ago… just got too busy to finish it (sort of embarrassed to admit this)! Anyway here it is in all is beautiful (finished) glory… so happy this is staying with “me”!
After making all of the veneer and stile repairs I painted it with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Provence with the highlights in Old Ochre… Hubby thinks I should paint the handles but I like them like this… I think…
I distressed, waxed and buffed the piece and now it has a gorgeous smooth feel and shine! I’m looking for an old metal number to put in the oval area, but haven’t found exactly what I’m looking for yet… I also want to add some small knobs to the side doors so I don’t need to find a skeleton key for it…
I just love these columns…
Oh… I forgot to mention at one point this used to have a mirror back (two chunks missing from the top rear) I had to repair the cutouts with scrap wood and wood filler… you have to look VERY close to see where the repair was made…
I’m using this in my Morning Room, off the kitchen, to hold some wine on the sides and our table clothes in the drawers. I’m now on the hunt for the perfect “whatever” to put above it… not sure if I want a mirror, shelves or art work yet…
Thanks for stopping by and checking out my “new” acquisition! I’m so glad this project is FINALLY complete!
Until next time…
