Green with Envy Desk and Chair

I have a new client who found this cute little desk and chair at Goodwill…

It had handles, but I removed them before I took this picture… OOPS! I had also already lightly sanded the Formica top because I wanted to make absolutely sure that the paint would properly adhere to it.

The chair is a smaller kids sized chair, in great shape, just kind of blah…

My client wanted the desk and chair painted green, specifically the same green I used on this console table and we decided to paint the handles flat black to coordinate with the other furniture in her room.

The mix is Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Versailles & Pure White with CeCe Caldwell’s Spring Green… so pretty!!!

After applying two coats of paint I lightly distressed the desk, applied wax and then buffed it.

The top just looks a little lighter than the body but it’s not, it was just super sunny (and hot and muggy) outside when I was taking these pictures…

I spray painted the chair in flat black, lightly distressed it and then sprayed a few coats of satin poly on it to bring back some shine… a fast and economical solution for this kind of chair… painting the chair by hand… with chalk paint, distressing, waxing and buffing is very time-consuming on a chair with so many spindles… YIKES! After it was complete I was VERY pleased with how the pieces looked together.

I really love these kinds of desks, you can usually get them cheap and they are great for kids rooms! My middle daughter still has the one I painted for her 8 years ago! She uses it as a makeup table now and it is just perfect for that too!

    1. Thanks Cynthia! The chair was soo easy.. sometimes I think I am killing myself with the chalk paint… I have some serious carpal tunnel going on with my hands! I need to start picking and choosing a little better when to hand paint and when to spray! BTW LOVE your kitchen cabinet transformation, I am sure you are too 😉

    I have this desk too! It works perfectly as a work area for my sewing/embroidering machine and just fits in a wide closet in my office. Since it’s typically hidden from view I guess I had never thought about how unattractive it is. I could paint it red, or watery blue, or mustard yellow–oh, me! Thanks for the inspiration!!!!

  4. really a fresh shade…and green is such a good shade to go with so many other colors…I just finished a dresser in 5 different shades of Blue…Looking for opinions…because thinking of doing this with a night stand that has not sold…and painting to match….What you said about the chair…or I think you have talked me into it…I paint with Annie Sloan but I am thinking 3 chairs I have wth so much detail…Thanks for the idea of spray paint will work for a vintage look

  5. Three chairs?? Try 6!!! I have a dining room table and six chairs to do. One chair is done already in ASCP. Only five to go. My polishing gets a bit of help from a polishing pad on an electric drill. Works right well…as long as I can keep my hands steady. Each chair has a cane panel on the back. I thought ASCP would be better for the cane than a spray paint. Do you have any thoughts on that, Susan?
    If I spot a desk like this one you did so well, I will know for sure it has possibilities. I do like the way you did it……but 30 years to get that professional look? Honestly, I don’t have 30 years left……LOL.

    1. Marje… I’m in the same boat as you are right now! I have a DR set with 6 cane back chairs and I’m dreading using ASCP because of all of the repetitious hand movements.. So I am contemplating spraying the chairs one color and painting the table base another coordinating color… that’s my thought today but I can always change my mind 😉 good luck, it’s a lot of work you have ahead of you!
