This little gossip bench was refinished for my youngest daughter, who is almost 10. She goes thrifting / antiquing with us sometimes on the weekends and one time she saw a cute gossip bench and fell in love with it! However, I did not…. my practical side was trying to determine where in her room it would fit, see she is a borderline hoarder (not really, but it is extremely hard to get her to get rid of anything!). Also, the finish on the bench was just a spray painted flat white with a white cushion at a cost of $140! Hmmm, I don’t think so! I very calmly explained to her that I would look for a less expensive one and design it just for her so it would coordinate with the rest of her furniture.. WHEW…crisis averted!
Well, it took a couple of months, but I got this one for $18, it didn’t have a seat but that was NOT problem!
I painted the bench with a couple of coats of ASCP in Paris Grey (which matches her dresser and nightstand), wax and buffed… easy stuff… now on to the “hard” stuff… My SAH (super awesome husband) cut a seat bottom for me and I glued a 2″ foam cushion to the wood, wrapped it in batting and covered the seat with white duck fabric then stapled it to the underside..
“WHITE!” you say… “for a child!” Yes.. see I have a plan… I am going to make a slipcover for the bench so when (not if) it gets dirty it can be washed… that’s me always thinking ahead 😉
Let me start by saying I am not a seamstress… Yes, I own a sewing machine, yes, I can sew a curtain and a pillowcase, but this is not my area of expertise by any means…
So I bought this great fabric that for the seat that is pink with a grey and cream stripe. I used the ruffler attachment for my sewing machine and made the ruffle part. I attached the ruffle to the seat fabric, inserting breaks where the arms meet the bench. This is the first time I had done anything like this… I took my time and kept checking fit every time I sewed a side, because of this I think the final fit came out great and it really did not take too long! I love the way it looks and the fact that I can remove it to wash it is a plus.
My daughter loves it! She likes to read or play video games there, but it’s more likely than not to have a bunch of her stuff piled up on it… her organization skills are not quite where I would like them to be! Which is why I took the pictures outside instead of in her room… seriously don’t have the time to organize it to look good enough to take pictures of.. I will one day soon though!
Thanks for stopping by and checking out her gossip bench! I love to read your comments so why not leave one!
